I make mixed media, semi-abstract paintings interpreting the colours, patterns and textures I encounter in nature.
I am drawn to paint every day in the natural environment. It is the negative space between trees, leaves or rocks that forms part of the object. When I am looking at the composition in my paintings, I place the elements within the image to express each ones’ individuality and status within that composition in relation to the other elements to create a sense of balance. There are sometimes surprises when I do that in what becomes the focus of the image. I enjoy the challenge of finding the voice in the picture from what might appear insignificant elements.
I am influenced by the fragility and strength in nature that endures outside the influence of humans. I join many observers in my enjoyment of the seasonal cycles of colour, light and detail in nature and how they interact. I am in awe of the magnitude and the minutiae. I can only describe a tiny part of all that goes on and will endure, but witnessing, interpreting and recording is what creates meaning for me. We are all pioneers in our own stories but there is a tension between wanting to encapsulate that sense of daily adventure for me in nature while not affecting its course in any way.
The Borgue peninsula is where I live. In this landscape, rocks are everywhere. The humbling forces, cycles and timescales of geology and nature have always been fascinating for me. From my daily observations ‘Out of this world and into Borgue’, my canvas takes shape. Painting gives me the opportunity to express the beauty I see. I have experienced this feeling of enthusiasm from others who have guided and inspired me and it is this sense of shared endeavour to appreciate the beauty we find around us that fires me up daily. That is the adventure. The depth of looking appears limitless each day and the journey begins anew.
